10 Years of ACT-I-VATE Comix

Update in 2018:  I haven’t checked back on the site in quite awhile so I have no idea if it was only down for a couple of days or years but hooray, it’s up again and the archives seem to be working well. A little sad to realize ACT-I-VATE Comix is busted.  The website – http://activatecomix.com/ – is still there but all of the images are broken.  It’s too bad – the webcomics collective, started by Dean Haspiel, brought together an amazing collection of work from comics artists who were generally new to the web. I can’t find out anything …

Big F*ing Hammer

Stumbled on to this new comic (through Piperka.net) which is really well drawn.  It’s a bit of a predictable coming-of-age superhero-ish plot but it does have lots of odd touches, including the protagonist barfing up a very big hammer (hence the title) to use in fighting the bad guys.  It barely has an archive so it’s a quick read right now and it’s entirely possible  that it will start taking crazier and crazier left turns in the plot.  I would check it out.

Comix TALK archives back on the web

I ported a good bit of the ComixTALK database from Drupal to WordPress and put it back up on the web. Of course there are numerous broken bits and ragged edges on the thing but it’s nice to have the archives in public again. That project lasted just about ten years and while I am probably not going to jump into writing there right now, now I can if I have the time and desire.

League of Regrettable Heroes by Jon Morris

Calamity Jon Morris has a book out called the League of Regrettable Heroes. For every superhero hitting the big time with a blockbuster movie, there are countless failures, also-rans, and D-listers. The League of Regrettable Superheroes affectionately presents one hundred of the strangest superheroes ever to see print—from Atoman to Zippo—complete with backstories, vintage art, and colorful commentary. Drawing on the entire history of the medium, the book celebrates characters that haven’t seen the light of day in decades, like Natureboy, Dr. Hormone, Thunder Bunny, and more. It’s a must-read for comics fans of all ages! Morris, the creator of …

SPX 2015

I can’t believe we’re less than two months away from SPX in Bethesda, Maryland.  This year’s edition is chock full of excellent guests and there are almost always a ton of great artists exhibiting at the tables. The SPX tumblr has a lot of good updates on SPX associated artists and the upcoming show.

Jason Shiga’s Demon

Have you been reading Jason Shiga’s webcomic Demon?  It’s a fantastic book — thrilling, disturbing and thought-provoking.  If you’ve ever read past comics by Shiga (and you should!) you know he has an almost cute, but precise cartoony art style which he combines with a passion for puzzle-driven narratives and  logic-driven characters. Demon is about a man who discovers that he is a demon who possesses humans.  Jason Shiga sets up his world with some rules to cover the existence of demons and then takes delight in extrapolating to ridiculous ends what that would mean.  I really don’t want to …
